Torchlights is a literary magazine designed by, written by and produced by the students here at Mainland High School. Its production began back in the 1970’s with Betsy Carlin in charge. Its appeal has lived on ever since! Any student at Mainland with a talent or passion for writing or art can submit work for selection. Many students who are part of the Torchlights committee are in or have been in the creative writing elective available here at Mainland. As more and more people became interested or remained interested, the need grew to establish the magazine’s production as a club so that everyone had a chance to participate. The literary magazine has been overseen by Laura Kieselbach for the past two years with this year promising to be just as creative and adventurous. We have managed to raise enough funds from the community and staff members here at school to print the first magazine ever in color over the 2006-2007 school year. It has been that way since. The students work diligently to get the work from paper to computer, from layout to magazine. It has been a learning experience for all involved and continues to be a joyous success. Any student can be a part of the committee and anyone with room in their schedule can be a part of creative writing, the two often going hand in hand. Much of the second semester for the creative writing class is spent choosing material for the magazine, chosen from a huge selection of entries.
